As you know, experts are not just people who regurgitate the advice of other experts in the same field.Experts are those who are very well educated AND widely experienced in a particular area. And experts' opinions come from first-hand scientific and practical understanding.
Many experts in the fitness / wellness industry advise working out on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, to accelerate fat loss. The theory behind this is that without proper fuel in the morning, the body will dip into its fat stores for energy.
I disagree with this for a few reasons. The first and most important one being, the quality of workout suffers without some amount (even a small amount) of fuel first. So, it's not easy to advance your cardiovascular condition and your strength, if you are trying to cut corners for fat loss. Secondly, proper fueling is integral to a well-supported metabolism (as is advanced cardiovascular condition and increased strength), and increasing one's resting metabolic rate is really what proves most effective in permanent and sound fat loss (a high resting metabolic rate means more calories burned just by existing). The third reason is simply based upon experience - my own, and that of my clients. I've tried everything, because as a trainer, I need to be my own guinea pig and find out what works best. This, combined with full understanding through observation with the experiences of my clients has supported, 100%, that a small snack before a workout in the morning makes for a better workout, and better appetite control throughout the rest of the day.
Like many debated topics in the fitness industry (another is whether to train abs daily, or with 48 hours rest like other muscle groups - and I will present this in an upcoming entry), you will likely read a lot of both sides of this argument. Listen to the facts on both sides, and then go with your gut. You will find what works best for your body.
But please just remember this one, inescapable fact: When you do everything right in each category of cardiovascular health, anatomical (muscular) health, and nutritional precision, your body will be lean and lively. Fat loss will no longer be an issue for you. There is no need to cut corners and play tricks on your body. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the body is smarter than your tricks!
Work with it, not against it... give it something to eat and something to go on before performing for you! Half a banana is sufficient if you like to save your breakfast for afterwards.
